Scott Sayre announces challenge to Emmett Hanger today

Scott Sayre is announcing his challenge to Senator Emmett Hanger today. Here was his press release. I’ll post an update as I hear more about how it went today. VCAP’s Dave Dziok is attending each of the announcements, so we should have good on-the-ground information to relay.

You are cordially invited to hear Scott Sayre, U.S. Army Veteran and President of Sayre Enterprises, as he holds his press conferences on Monday, February 19, to announce his intention to run as a Republican candidate for the office of State Senator in Virginia ’s 24th Senate District. Mr. Sayre will address the crowd at each location and then take a few questions (time permitting).

Locations/times:

Rockbridge County High School @ 8:40am ( 143 Greenhouse Road , Lexington )
Waynesboro High School @ 10:20am ( 1200 W Main St. , Waynesboro )
Fishersville (office of Sayre Promotions on Rt. 250) @ 11:45am ( 1707 Jefferson Hwy. , Fishersville)
Greene County Court House @ 2:30pm (22 Court Street, Stanardsville)
Rockingham (Shickel Corporation) @ 4:00pm ( 115 Dry River Road , Bridgewater )
Highland County ( Highland Center ) @ 6:30pm ( Spruce Street , Monterey )

Update at 11:45am: The first two press conferences at Rockbridge and Waynesboro High School went very well. They easily had more than 50 in attendance at each location. Lots of good press coverage. Will get some good quotes at the 11:45am press conference.

Update at 1:20pm: The third press conference was just down the road from the second press conference, so much of the media who had just attended the press conference at Waynesboro High School did not go down the street to the next Press Conference. This press conference had about 40 people in attendance. Here are some of the issues Scott is covering. I’ll post more as we cover the other press conferences today…

HOLD THE LINE on TAXES and SPENDING-Scott believes that it is time to send a message to the professional politicians in Richmond that when it comes to higher taxes and more government spending, enough is enough! As Senator, Scott’s top priority will be to hold the line on taxes and identify and eliminate wasteful spending. Valley families and businesses should keep more of their hard-earned dollars.

CREATE JOBS-Lots of politicians like to talk about creating jobs, but Scott Sayre has actually done it. He started Sayre Enterprises 20 years ago in a garage with one product and one employee. Today he provides over 100 local jobs acros the Valley. As Senator, Scott will stand up for small business owners and defend free enterprise from job killing taxes and regulations.

Update 3:30pm: The third stop was in a very rural area. They had about 20 in attendance. The announcement tour has gone very well, with 2 of the 4 stops having TV cameras present. Those in attendance seem very excited to hear a message of fiscal conservatism. Some more issues he covered were:

PROTECT SHENANDOAH VALUES-Scott is 100% pro-life. As an avid turkey hunter and outdoorsman, Scott will also protect our second amendment rights and defend the rights of sportsmen.

CRACK DOWN on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and GANG VIOLENCE-Scott believes we must secure our borders first and say no to illegal immigration. He strongly opposes allowing illegal immigrants in-state tuition. As a former military police officer, Scott will work to give local law enforcement the tools they need to crack down on gang violence.

Update 6:30pm: Sorry for the delay. It took a while to get word back from the event. The room was packed full with 30 or more present. TV 3, photographer and reporters were present as well…making it another good stop for press coverage. Many of the hardcore Republican activist from the Valley were present at the press conferences throughout the day. Still waiting word on the last stop.

The campaign slogan for the Sayre campaign:

THE EXPERIENCE WE NEED,
CONSERVATIVE VALUES WE CAN TRUST

A couple of Valley bloggers attended Sayre’s press conference today. See what SWAC Girl says, she even shot some pictures. Elle at In-Politically Correct also attended a press conference today. She has some post-commentary.

I attended the Waynesboro announcement (though I live in Rockingham Co. More later!). I was interested to see how Scott would come across. I have known Sayre for more than 40 years, and sometime familiarity makes it hard to be objective. We went to Waynesboro High School together, whihnc is why I wanted to be there for the announcement. So I went with an open mind, and I really was impressed with his platform. I have known him as a friend, as a soldier, as a businessman, and now as a politician. I think he can bring some great Valley tradition to the Senate, and provide the kind of leadership we need. To take nothing away from Sen. Hanger, but Sayre is the next generation, and we need to move forward now.
