The Transportation Compromise that was finalized this past weekend is significantly flawed. It is very unfortunate that Republicans did not heed the warnings and concerns of conservative activists, organizations and voting citizens from the 2002 referendum, for fear of losing their elections in 2007 if a transportation compromise was not put forth. VCAP has continued to herald the VDOT and land use reforms in the package, but much else is completely unacceptable.
What is more unfortunate is that conservatives, Republicans and the House have allowed the liberal Senate and Governor to dictate the financial priorities, spending solutions, and messaging these last four years. The other side keeps touting a “cut in core services” or “robbing the general fund.” Conservatives needs a more coherent message and reply–which doesn’t include joining the taxing clan by the way. We cannot allow the soundbites to continue ad nauseum (which I realize is difficult with the biased press) without a short and powerful response both in action and word. For example, how about the old adage, “No taxation without representation” in response to the regional taxation proposals?
When did it become a sin to reduce the growth rate (not a cut in actual cost, but the percent increase) at which we increase spending (not maintain, but INCREASE)? Why isn’t Transportation considered a core service along with Education, Public Safety, and Health Care? When did taxation become the preferred method over strategic fiscal discipline? Why can’t Republicans reign in spending and stop passing tax increases during years of economic plenty and abundant surpluses?
Republicans need a come to Jesus meeting on their core Party beliefs. Are they the party of limited government, prudent spending, and limited taxation?
The road that is in serious need of repair is the road that has Republicans continuing to propose and fight for tax increases (or fees as some feel more comfortable saying). I can assure you of one thing, that road will only lead to a Dead End. One can vote Democrat to get those results. They are voting themselves right out of the power and control they are so desperately trying to maintain.
